I found out about DOOM’s passing via a casual delivery from a mate over a group Zoom chat on the crux of 2021.  To quote the villain, “Wow, it caught me off guard“. Death has been more common in this past year, I consider myself lucky everyone around has been healthy, but it seems some big hitters in the public eye have passed, and some in the worst way imaginable. This hit so much harder.

I’ve always been a huge fan. I missed KMD and the initial release of Operation Doomsday. I can’t even remember how I found him (I spent most of my University days on Soulseek so I’m guessing via that). But when I did I was hooked. I immediately filled in the gaps in my collection.

I remember being on his website forum awaiting MM Food to drop. I remember a serendipitous trip to New York and the Kidrobot toys dropped while I was there. I remember the first listen to Madvillain (in my personal top 3, up there with the Rocky 4 soundtrack). I remember seeing him & Ghostface at The Roundhouse. I remember getting some of the worst quality AVI video files and making a DOOM DVD on a PC that definitely wasn’t up to the task. I remember making The MF Black album and ‘mixing’ it on some £12 PC speakers. Overall I think it worked. Sonically it’s got the feel of someone who knows fuck all about mixing and as for ‘My First Song’… it’s so out of sync it’s damn right harrowing. Don’t believe me?
FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF

I guess what I’m trying to say is, he’s had a profound impact on my life, especially creatively. So spending January putting these bits together has been cathartic and hopefully befitting of his legacy. I’m a private person but I think this is needed as qualifier to why any of this shit exists. This isn’t a clout chasing bandwagon move. This isn’t going to be a new avenue for me. I’m not about to do this for any other artist in the near future. It’s purely a one off homage to my favourite rapper.

It’s been great to show these pieces and get feedback from people who felt the same and I wanted to be able to share them. So if you ever threw me a like, a fire emoji in the DMs, shared any of my shit – thank you from the bottom of my heart.

But this just hit different with me.
